Abbott and St. Jude Medical Inc. launched a multiyear joint initiative that provides mutual U.S. customers access to a portfolio of interventional cardiology, cardiac rhythm management, electrophysiology and intravascular imaging and diagnostic technologies.

The alliance builds upon an agreement the two firms established in 2008. With this enhancement, Abbott and St. Jude Medical will jointly promote each other's product offerings when developing contract solutions with U.S. hospital customers.

The products covered in the alliance include Abbott's Xience line of everolimus-eluting coronary stents and St. Jude Medical's portfolio of electrophysiology, cardiac rhythm management and cardiology technologies, including ablation catheters, pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators, leads, fractional flow reserve lesion assessment technology and optical coherence tomography imaging products.

In a separate distribution agreement, Abbott gained the rights to distribute two of St. Jude Medical's products in the United States--the Ilumien percutaneous coronary intervention optimization system and the RadiAnalyzer Xpress measurement system.
